 Applying tooth gems

With these simple steps, you can have your own tooth gem set in place to brighten your smile.

  • Before applying a gem, the tooth will be cleaned and prepped.

  • A bonding agent will be applied to the area where the gem will be placed.

  • The specialist will then use instruments to secure the jewelry to the bonding composite.

  • The process is then finished by a special lamp that will be used to cure the bonding agent.

  • Your gem specialist will give you proper aftercare instructions to assure your tooth gem will stay in place and be long lasting.

TOOTH CHARm FAQ

What is a tooth gem?

A tooth gem is a semi-permanent, non invasive procedure that entails placing jewelry on your tooth/teeth.

Will I feel the gem in my mouth?

Yes! You will feel something new on your tooth, but after a few days you will get used to the feeling.

How long will the jewelry stay on my teeth?

Tooth gems can last anywhere between one month to one year. The longevity of tooth gems depends entirely on the individual. The natural acidity of your saliva and diet will affect how long it lasts. This also depends on your at home care, the size of the gem, and placement on the tooth.

How do I remove the tooth gem when I no longer want it?

They are meant to fall off naturally. We do not offer tooth gem removal. They may be removed at any time by your dentist or dental hygienist.

Does the application procedure hurt?

Not at all! The procedure of applying tooth gems is safe and easy, no drilling is required. The process takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Our trained professionals use a dental grade etch and adhesive to bond the tooth gems to the tooth. An LED light is used to cure the adhesive to ensure a long lasting bond. The process is very similar to the technique for attaching traditional braces to teeth.

Can I still have my teeth cleaned by a dental professional?

Yes, they can just clean around the gem. Always practice good dental hygiene.

Will the gem harm my tooth?

No, it's perfectly safe. You can be sure our tooth gem technicians are trained in their professional application and are using the highest quality dental grade materials.

Can I get a tooth gem on my crown?

Tooth gems cannot be applied to any artificial tooth surface such as crowns, caps, veneers or dentures.

What are the crystals?

We use genuine crystals that are lead free and non toxic. They do NOT contain dangerous plastics or acrylics, and are safe for oral use. They are stain resistant with a flat back and foiled platinum surface.

Can I get a tooth gem if I’m under 18 with parental permission?

Yes. You must be 18+ to get a tooth gem or under 18 with parental consent. Your parent/guardian and proper identification must be present.

Is the adhesive bonding agent safe for my teeth?

Yes, it’s a dental grade adhesive that is used in the application of traditional braces.

Can I wear a tooth gem if I have a retainer?

Tooth gems are not recommended if you are currently using a clear plastic retainer (Invisalign, Smile Direct) as it will not fit properly over the charm. If you are using a wire type retainer, we encourage you to bring it to your appointment so that we can ensure the gem is placed where it won’t interfere with it.

Does the tooth gem obstruct regular brushing?

Do not brush directly over the gem within the initial 24 hours of application. Do not use an electric tooth brush for at least 48 hours after. Brush regularly and always practice good dental hygiene. You will want to gently brush around the gem to avoid any build up.

Are there any suggested food restrictions for wearing a gem?

No eating or drinking anything but water for the first 1-2 hours. Avoid hard foods and candies for the first 12 hours.

What if the gem falls off and I swallow it?

Don’t worry, it will pass naturally. They are lead free and non toxic.
